Joshua 5:1-12

TMBA

NIV

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the side of the Jordan westward and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had passed over, that their heart melted; neither was there spirit in them any more because of the children of Israel.
1 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, "Make thee sharp knives and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time."
2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.”
3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins [or, Gibeahhaaraloth].
3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.
4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people who came out of Egypt who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way after they came out of Egypt.
4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.
5 Now all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness on the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD. Unto these the LORD swore that He would not show them the land which the LORD swore unto their fathers that He would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7 And their children, whom He raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.
7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way.
8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp till they were whole.
8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.
9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, "This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal [that is, Rolling] unto this day.
9 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.
10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.
11 And they ate of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the Passover, unleavened cakes and parched corn on the selfsame day.
11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.
