When a crowd of thousands upon thousands had gathered so that they were crushing each other, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples: “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees—I mean, the mismatch between their hearts and lives. 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Nothing is hidden that won't be revealed, and nothing is secret that won't be brought out into the open. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
Therefore, whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and whatever you have whispered in the rooms deep inside the house will be announced from the rooftops. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
“I tell you, my friends, don't be terrified by those who can kill the body but after that can do nothing more. 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
I'll show you whom you should fear: fear the one who, after you have been killed, has the authority to throw you into hell. Indeed, I tell you, that's the one you should fear. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
Aren't five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them is overlooked by God. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies ? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
Even the hairs on your head are all counted. Don't be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
"I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before humans, the Human One will acknowledge before God's angels. 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.
But the one who rejects me before others will be rejected before God's angels. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.
Anyone who speaks a word against the Human One will be forgiven, but whoever insults the Holy Spirit won't be forgiven. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
When they bring you before the synagogues, rulers, and authorities, don't worry about how to defend yourself or what you should say. 11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
The Holy Spirit will tell you at that very moment what you must say." 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
Someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
Jesus said to him, "Man, who appointed me as judge or referee between you and your brother?" 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"
Then Jesus said to them, "Watch out! Guard yourself against all kinds of greed. After all, one's life isn't determined by one's possessions, even when someone is very wealthy." 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
Then he told them a parable: "A certain rich man's land produced a bountiful crop. 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.
He said to himself, What will I do? I have no place to store my harvest! 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'
Then he thought, Here's what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. That's where I'll store all my grain and goods. 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
I'll say to myself, You have stored up plenty of goods, enough for several years. Take it easy! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '
But God said to him, ‘Fool, tonight you will die. Now who will get the things you have prepared for yourself?' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself ?'
This is the way it will be for those who hoard things for themselves and aren't rich toward God." 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Therefore, I say to you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
There is more to life than food and more to the body than clothing. 23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Consider the ravens: they neither plant nor harvest, they have no silo or barn, yet God feeds them. You are worth so much more than birds! 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
Who among you by worrying can add a single moment to your life? 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
If you can't do such a small thing, why worry about the rest? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Notice how the lilies grow. They don't wear themselves out with work, and they don't spin cloth. But I say to you that even Solomon in all his splendor wasn't dressed like one of these. 27 "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
If God dresses grass in the field so beautifully, even though it's alive today and tomorrow it's thrown into the furnace, how much more will God do for you, you people of weak faith! 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
Don't chase after what you will eat and what you will drink. Stop worrying. 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
All the nations of the world long for these things. Your Father knows that you need them. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Instead, desire his kingdom and these things will be given to you as well. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
“Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights in giving you the kingdom. 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
Sell your possessions and give to those in need. Make for yourselves wallets that don't wear out—a treasure in heaven that never runs out. No thief comes near there, and no moth destroys. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be too. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"Be dressed for service and keep your lamps lit. 35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
Be like people waiting for their master to come home from a wedding celebration, who can immediately open the door for him when he arrives and knocks on the door. 36 like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
Happy are those servants whom the master finds waiting up when he arrives. I assure you that, when he arrives, he will dress himself to serve, seat them at the table as honored guests, and wait on them. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
Happy are those whom he finds alert, even if he comes at midnight or just before dawn. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.
But know this, if the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he wouldn't have allowed his home to be broken into. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be ready, because the Human One is coming at a time when you don't expect him." 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?" 41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"
The Lord replied, “Who are the faithful and wise managers whom the master will put in charge of his household servants, to give them their food at the proper time? 42 The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
Happy are the servants whom the master finds fulfilling their responsibilities when he comes. 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
I assure you that the master will put them in charge of all his possessions. 44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
“But suppose that these servants should say to themselves, My master is taking his time about coming. And suppose they began to beat the servants, both men and women, and to eat, drink, and get drunk. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk.
The master of those servants would come on a day when they weren't expecting him, at a time they couldn't predict. The master will cut them into pieces and assign them a place with the unfaithful. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
That servant who knew his master's will but didn't prepare for it or act on it will be beaten severely. 47 "That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.
The one who didn't know the master's will but who did things deserving punishment will be beaten only a little. Much will be demanded from everyone who has been given much, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
"I came to cast fire upon the earth. How I wish that it was already ablaze! 49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
I have a baptism I must experience. How I am distressed until it's completed! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!
Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, I have come instead to bring division. 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
From now on, a household of five will be divided—three against two and two against three. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
Father will square off against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Jesus also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud forming in the west, you immediately say, ‘It's going to rain.' And indeed it does. 54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.
And when a south wind blows, you say, ‘A heat wave is coming.' And it does. 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret conditions on earth and in the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret the present time? 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
And why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? 57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
As you are going to court with your accuser, make your best effort to reach a settlement along the way. Otherwise, your accuser may bring you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
I tell you, you won't get out of there until you have paid the very last cent." 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "
