GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
Meanwhile, thousands of people had gathered. They were so crowded that they stepped on each other. Jesus spoke to his disciples and said, "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. I'm talking about their hypocrisy. 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Nothing has been covered that will not be exposed. Whatever is secret will be made known. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. Whatever you have whispered in private rooms will be shouted from the housetops. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
"My friends, I can guarantee that you don't need to be afraid of those who kill the body. After that they can't do anything more. 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
I'll show you the one you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who has the power to throw you into hell after killing you. I'm warning you to be afraid of him. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
"Aren't five sparrows sold for two cents? God doesn't forget any of them. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies ? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
Even every hair on your head has been counted. Don't be afraid! You are worth more than many sparrows. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
I can guarantee that the Son of Man will acknowledge in front of God's angels every person who acknowledges him in front of others. 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.
But God's angels will be told that I don't know those people who tell others that they don't know me. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.
Everyone who says something against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But the person who dishonors the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
"When you are put on trial in synagogues or in front of rulers and authorities, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say. 11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
At that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you must say." 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share of the inheritance that our father left us." 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
Jesus said to him, "Who appointed me to be your judge or to divide [your inheritance]?" 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"
He told the people, "Be careful to guard yourselves from every kind of greed. Life is not about having a lot of material possessions." 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
Then he used this illustration. He said, "A rich man had land that produced good crops. 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.
He thought, 'What should I do? I don't have enough room to store my crops.' 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'
He said, 'I know what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones so that I can store all my grain and goods in them. 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
Then I'll say to myself, "You've stored up a lot of good things for years to come. Take life easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."' 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '
"But God said to him, 'You fool! I will demand your life from you tonight! Now who will get what you've accumulated?' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself ?'
That's how it is when a person has material riches but is not rich in his relationship with God." 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "So I tell you to stop worrying about what you will eat or wear. 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothes. 23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Consider the crows. They don't plant or harvest. They don't even have a storeroom or a barn. Yet, God feeds them. You are worth much more than birds. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
"Can any of you add an hour to your life by worrying? 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
If you can't do a small thing like that, why worry about other things? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Consider how the flowers grow. They never work or spin yarn for clothes. But I say that not even Solomon in all his majesty was dressed like one of these flowers. 27 "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
That's the way God clothes the grass in the field. Today it's alive, and tomorrow it's thrown into an incinerator. So how much more will he clothe you people who have so little faith? 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
"Don't concern yourself about what you will eat or drink, and quit worrying about these things. 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
Everyone in the world is concerned about these things, but your Father knows you need them. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Rather, be concerned about his kingdom. Then these things will be provided for you. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
Don't be afraid, little flock. Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
"Sell your material possessions, and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves wallets that don't wear out! Make a treasure for yourselves in heaven that never loses its value! In heaven thieves and moths can't get close enough to destroy your treasure. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
Your heart will be where your treasure is. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"Be ready for action, and have your lamps burning. 35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
Be like servants waiting to open the door at their master's knock when he returns from a wedding. 36 like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. I can guarantee this truth: He will change his clothes, make them sit down at the table, and serve them. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.
They will be blessed if he comes in the middle of the night or toward morning and finds them awake. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.
"Of course, you realize that if the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let him break into his house. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
Be ready, because the Son of Man will return when you least expect him." 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
Peter asked, "Lord, did you use this illustration just for us or for everyone?" 41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"
The Lord asked, "Who, then, is the faithful, skilled manager that the master will put in charge of giving the other servants their share of food at the right time? 42 The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
That servant will be blessed if his master finds him doing this job when he comes. 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.
I can guarantee this truth: He will put that servant in charge of all his property. 44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
On the other hand, that servant may think that his master is taking a long time to come home. The servant may begin to beat the other servants and to eat, drink, and get drunk. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk.
His master will return at an unexpected time. Then his master will punish him severely and assign him a place with unfaithful people. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
"The servant who knew what his master wanted but didn't get ready to do it will receive a hard beating. 47 "That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.
But the servant who didn't know [what his master wanted] and did things for which he deserved punishment will receive a light beating. A lot will be expected from everyone who has been given a lot. More will be demanded from everyone who has been entrusted with a lot. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
"I have come to throw fire on the earth. I wish that it had already started! 49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
I have a baptism to go through, and I will suffer until it is over. 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!
"Do you think I came to bring peace to earth? No! I can guarantee that I came to bring nothing but division. 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
From now on a family of five will be divided. Three will be divided against two and two against three. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.
A father will be against his son and a son against his father. A mother will be against her daughter and a daughter against her mother. A mother-in-law will be against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Jesus said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud coming up in the west, you immediately say, 'There's going to be a rainstorm,' and it happens. 54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.
When you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and that's what happens. 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
You hypocrites! You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of earth and sky. But for some reason you don't know how to judge the time in which you're living. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
So why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? 57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
For instance, when an opponent brings you to court in front of a ruler, do your best to settle with him before you get there. Otherwise, he will drag you in front of a judge. The judge will hand you over to an officer who will throw you into prison. 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
I can guarantee that you won't get out until you pay every penny of your fine." 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "
