| 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the pasch, was at hand. | 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, |
| 2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put Jesus to death: but they feared the people. | 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. |
| 3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve. | 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. |
| 4 And he went and discoursed with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might betray him to them. | 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. |
| 5 And they were glad and covenanted to give him money. | 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. |
| 6 And he promised. And he sought opportunity to betray him in the absence of the multitude. | 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. |
| 7 And the day of the unleavened bread came, on which it was necessary that the pasch should be killed. | 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
| 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, and prepare for us the pasch, that we may eat. | 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." |
| 9 But they said: Where wilt thou that we prepare? | 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. |
| 10 And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water: follow him into the house where he entereth in. | 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, |
| 11 And you shall say to the goodman of the house: The master saith to thee: Where is the guest chamber, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples? | 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' |
| 12 And he will shew you a large dining room, furnished. And there prepare. | 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." |
| 13 And they going, found as he had said to them and made ready the pasch. | 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. |
| 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down: and the twelve apostles with him. | 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. |
| 15 And he said to them: With desire I have desired to eat this pasch with you, before I suffer. | 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
| 16 For I say to you that from this time I will not eat it, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. | 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." |
| 17 And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks and said: Take and divide it among you. | 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. |
| 18 For I say to you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God come. | 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
| 19 And taking bread, he gave thanks and brake and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me. | 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." |
| 20 In like manner, the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament in my blood, which shall be shed for you. | 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. |
| 21 But yet behold: the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. | 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. |
| 22 And the Son of man indeed goeth, according to that which is determined: but yet, woe to that man by whom he shall be betrayed. | 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." |
| 23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. | 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. |
| 24 And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater. | 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. |
| 25 And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent. | 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. |
| 26 But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger: and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. | 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. |
| 27 For which is greater, he that sitteth at table or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth. | 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. |
| 28 And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations: | 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. |
| 29 And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom; | 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, |
| 30 That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
| 31 And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. | 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. |
| 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren. | 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." |
| 33 Who said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death. | 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." |
| 34 And he said: I say to thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, till thou thrice deniest that thou knowest me. And he said to them: | 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." |
| 35 When I sent you without purse and scrip and shoes, did you want anything? | 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. |
| 36 But they said: Nothing. Then said he unto them: But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a scrip: and he that hath not, let him sell his coat and buy a sword. | 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. |
| 37 For I say to you that this that is written must yet be fulfilled in me. And with the wicked was he reckoned. For the things concerning me have an end. | 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." |
| 38 But they said: Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said to them: It is enough. | 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. |
| 39 And going out, he went, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him. | 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. |
| 40 And when he was come to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest ye enter into temptation. | 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." |
| 41 And he was withdrawn away from them a stone’s cast. And kneeling down, he prayed. | 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, |
| 42 Saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done. | 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." |
| 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer. | 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. |
| 44 And his sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground. | 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
| 45 And when he rose up from prayer and was come to the disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow. | 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. |
| 46 And he said to them: Why sleep you? Arise: pray: lest you enter into temptation. | 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." |
| 47 As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus, for to kiss him. | 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, |
| 48 And Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of man with a kiss? | 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
| 49 And they that were about him, seeing what would follow, said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword? | 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" |
| 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. | 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. |
| 51 But Jesus answering, said: Suffer ye thus far. And when he had touched his ear, he healed him. | 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. |
| 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and magistrates of the temple and the ancients, that were come unto him: Are ye come out, as it were against a thief, with swords and clubs? | 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? |
| 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth your hands against me: but this is your hour and the power of darkness. | 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." |
| 54 And apprehending him, they led him to the high priest’s house. But Peter followed afar off. | 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. |
| 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were sitting about it, Peter was in the midst of them. | 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. |
| 56 Whom when a certain servant maid had seen sitting at the light and had earnestly beheld him, she said: This man also was with him. | 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." |
| 57 But he denied him, saying: Woman, I know him not. | 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. |
| 58 And after a little while, another seeing him, said: Thou also art one of them. But Peter said: O man, I am not. | 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. |
| 59 And after the space, as it were of one hour, another certain man affirmed, saying: Of a truth, this man was also with him: for he is also a Galilean. | 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." |
| 60 And Peter said: Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew. | 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. |
| 61 And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny thrice. | 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." |
| 62 And Peter going out, wept bitterly. | 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
| 63 And the men that held him mocked him and struck him. | 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. |
| 64 And they blindfolded him and smote his face. And they asked him saying: Prophesy: Who is it that struck thee? | 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" |
| 65 And blaspheming, many other things they said against him. | 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. |
| 66 And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people and the chief priests and scribes came together. And they brought him into their council saying: If thou be the Christ, tell us. | 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. |
| 67 And he saith to them: If I shall tell you, you will not believe me. | 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, |
| 68 And if I shall also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. | 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. |
| 69 But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. | 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." |
| 70 Then said they all: Art thou then the Son of God? Who said: You say that I am. | 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." |
| 71 And they said: What need we any further testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth. | 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips." |
