New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.
But Martha was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me." 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself ? Tell her to help me!"
But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are so upset over all these details! 41 "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things,
There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it -- and I won't take it away from her." 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
