New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Jesus replied, "Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?" 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"
Then he said, "Beware! Don't be greedy for what you don't have. Real life is not measured by how much we own." 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
And he gave an illustration: "A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.
In fact, his barns were full to overflowing. 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'
So he said, 'I know! I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I'll have room enough to store everything. 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
And I'll sit back and say to myself, My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!'" 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '
"But God said to him, 'You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get it all?'" 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself ?'
"Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God." 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
