English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. 1 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.
And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy.
And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?" 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him away.
And he said to them, "Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?" 5 Then he asked them, "If one of you has a son or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him out?"
And they could not reply to these things. 6 And they had nothing to say.
