Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. 1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him.
And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
So he told them this parable: 3 Then Jesus told them this parable:
"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders
And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.'
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
