| 1 And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods. | 1 Jesus told his disciples: "There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. |
| 2 And he called him and said to him: How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship: for now thou canst be steward no longer. | 2 So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.' |
| 3 And the steward said within himself: What shall I do, because my lord taketh away from me the stewardship? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. | 3 "The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg-- |
| 4 I know what I will do, that when I shall be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. | 4 I know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.' |
| 5 Therefore, calling together every one of his lord’s debtors, he said to the first: How much dost thou owe my lord? | 5 "So he called in each one of his master's debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' |
| 6 But he said: An hundred barrels of oil. And he said to him: Take thy bill and sit down quickly and write fifty. | 6 " 'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied. "The manager told him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.' |
