New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Jesus said, "There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed and who lived each day in luxury. 19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
At his door lay a diseased beggar named Lazarus. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Finally, the beggar died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham." 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
"The rich man shouted, 'Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in these flames.'" 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
"But Abraham said to him, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. Anyone who wanted to cross over to you from here is stopped at its edge, and no one there can cross over to us.'" 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
"Then the rich man said, 'Please, Father Abraham, send him to my father's home. 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,
For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them about this place of torment so they won't have to come here when they die.'" 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"But Abraham said, 'Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read their writings anytime they want to.'" 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
"The rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will turn from their sins.'" 30 " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"But Abraham said, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even if someone rises from the dead.'" 31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "
