New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
The Savior -- yes, the Messiah, the Lord -- has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
And this is how you will recognize him: You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!" 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others -- the armies of heaven -- praising God: 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to all whom God favors. " 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Come on, let's go to Bethlehem! Let's see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
They ran to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
Then the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
but Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and thought about them often. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
The shepherds went back to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God for what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child, just as the angel had said. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
