New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
When Jesus had finished saying all this, he went back to Capernaum. 1 When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
Now the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death. 2 There a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal his slave. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to come with them and help the man. "If anyone deserves your help, it is he," they said, 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this,
"for he loves the Jews and even built a synagogue for us." 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue."
So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, "Lord, don't trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor. 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
I know because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, 'Go,' and they go, or 'Come,' and they come. And if I say to my slaves, 'Do this or that,' they do it." 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd, he said, "I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all the land of Israel!" 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."
And when the officer's friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
