| 7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. | 7 "But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' |
| 8 And they took him, and killed [him], and cast [him] out of the vineyard. | 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. |
| 9 What therefore will the Lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. | 9 "What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. |
| 10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: | 10 Haven't you read this scripture: " 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; |
| 11 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? | 11 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ?" |
| 12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and departed. | 12 Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away. |
| 13 And they sent to him certain of the Pharisees, and of the Herodians, to catch him in [his] words. | 13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. |
| 14 And when they had come, they say to him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not? | 14 They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? |
| 15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see [it]. | 15 Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." |
| 16 And they brought [it]: and he saith to them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? And they said to him, Cesar's. | 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. |
| 17 And Jesus answering, said to them, Render to Cesar the things that are Cesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they wondered at him. | 17 Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him. |
