New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and what they had taught. 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
Then Jesus said, "Let's get away from the crowds for a while and rest." There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."
They left by boat for a quieter spot. 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
But many people saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and met them as they landed. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
A vast crowd was there as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and it is getting late. 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.
Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy themselves some food." 36 Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But Jesus said, "You feed them." "With what?" they asked. "It would take a small fortune to buy food for all this crowd!" 37 But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
"How much food do you have?" he asked. "Go and find out." They came back and reported, "We have five loaves of bread and two fish." 38 "How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish."
Then Jesus told the crowd to sit down in groups on the green grass. 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they sat in groups of fifty or a hundred. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and asked God's blessing on the food. Breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples to give to the people. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate as much as they wanted, 42 They all ate and were satisfied,
and they picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Five thousand men had eaten from those five loaves! 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
