| King James Version (KJV) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed , and commanded to set them also before them. | 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. |
| 8 So they did eat , and were filled : and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. | 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. |
| 9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away . | 9 About four thousand men were present. And having sent them away, |
| 10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. | 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. |
| 11 And the Pharisees came forth , and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. | 11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. |
| 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith , Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. | 12 He sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it." |
| 13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. | 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side. |
| 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. | 14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. |
| 15 And he charged them, saying , Take heed , beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. | 15 "Be careful," Jesus warned them. "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod." |
| 16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying , It is because we have no bread. | 16 They discussed this with one another and said, "It is because we have no bread." |
| 17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye , because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand ? have ye your heart yet hardened ? | 17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? |
