and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon, of her [that had been the wife] of Urias; 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
and Solomon begat Roboam, and Roboam begat Abia, and Abia begat Asa, 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

and Ozias begat Joatham, and Joatham begat Achaz, and Achaz begat Ezekias, 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
and Ezekias begat Manasses, and Manasses begat Amon, and Amon begat Josias, 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,
and Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away of Babylon. 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
And after the carrying away of Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel, and Salathiel begat Zorobabel, 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
and Zorobabel begat Abiud, and Abiud begat Eliakim, and Eliakim begat Azor, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,
and Azor begat Sadoc, and Sadoc begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud, 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud,
and Eliud begat Eliazar, and Eliazar begat Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,
and Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
All the generations, therefore, from Abraham to David [were] fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away of Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the carrying away of Babylon unto the Christ, fourteen generations. 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was thus: His mother, Mary, that is, having been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of [the] Holy Spirit. 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
But Joseph, her husband, being [a] righteous [man], and unwilling to expose her publicly, purposed to have put her away secretly; 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
but while he pondered on these things, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to take to [thee] Mary, thy wife, for that which is begotten in her is of [the] Holy Spirit. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for *he* shall save his people from their sins. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all this came to pass that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by [the] Lord, through the prophet, saying, 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us.' 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."
But Joseph, having awoke up from his sleep, did as the angel of [the] Lord had enjoined him, and took to [him] his wife, 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
and knew her not until she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
