Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." 16 Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." 17 "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
And he said, "Bring them here to me." 18 "Bring them here to me," he said.
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick, 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well. 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
