New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'If an eye is injured, injure the eye of the person who did it. If a tooth gets knocked out, knock out the tooth of the person who did it.' 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'
But I say, don't resist an evil person! If you are slapped on the right cheek, turn the other, too. 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
If you are ordered to court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
Give to those who ask, and don't turn away from those who want to borrow." 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
