New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. " 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted, too." 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
You are the light of the world -- like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them. 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God's law will remain until its purpose is achieved. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
