The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
He that dasheth in pieces is come up against thy face: keep the fortress, watch the way, make [thy] loins strong, fortify [thy] power mightily. 1 An attacker advances against you, [Nineveh]. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength!
For Jehovah hath brought again the glory of Jacob, as the glory of Israel; for the wasters have wasted them, and marred their vine-branches. 2 The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots [glitter] with the sheen of steel, in the day of his preparation, and the spears are brandished. 3 The shields of his soldiers are red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready; the spears of pine are brandished.
The chariots rush madly in the streets, they justle one against another in the broad ways: the appearance of them is like torches, they run like lightnings. 4 The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning.
He bethinketh him of his nobles: they stumble in their march; they make haste to the wall thereof, and the shelter is prepared. 5 He summons his picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace melteth away. 6 The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.
And it is decreed: she shall be uncovered, she shall be led away, and her maids shall moan as with the voice of doves, drumming upon their breasts. 7 It is decreed that [the city] be exiled and carried away. Its slave girls moan like doves and beat upon their breasts.
Nineveh hath been like a pool of water, since the day she existed, yet they flee away. ... Stand! Stand! But none looketh back. 8 Nineveh is like a pool, and its water is draining away. "Stop! Stop!" they cry, but no one turns back.
Plunder the silver, plunder the gold; for there is no end of the splendid store of all precious vessels. 9 Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The supply is endless, the wealth from all its treasures!
She is empty, and void, and waste; and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and writhing pain is in all loins, and all their faces grow pale. 10 She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale.
