Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he mocked the Jews. 1 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
He said in the presence of his associates and of the army of Samaria, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore things? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish it in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish—and burned ones at that?" 2 and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, "What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble--burned as they are?"
Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "That stone wall they are building—any fox going up on it would break it down!" 3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, "What they are building--if even a fox climbed up on it, he would break down their wall of stones!"
Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their taunt back on their own heads, and give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 4 Hear us, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
Do not cover their guilt, and do not let their sin be blotted out from your sight; for they have hurled insults in the face of the builders. 5 Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.
