Now the Reubenites and the Gadites owned a very great number of cattle. When they saw that the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead was a good place for cattle, 1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock.
the Gadites and the Reubenites came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said,
"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon— 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon--
the land that the Lord subdued before the congregation of Israel—is a land for cattle; and your servants have cattle." 4 the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock.
They continued, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; do not make us cross the Jordan." 5 If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan."
But Moses said to the Gadites and to the Reubenites, "Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here? 6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here?
Why will you discourage the hearts of the Israelites from going over into the land that the Lord has given them? 7 Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them?
Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.
When they went up to the Wadi Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the hearts of the Israelites from going into the land that the Lord had given them. 9 After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.
The Lord's anger was kindled on that day and he swore, saying, 10 The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:
"Surely none of the people who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not unreservedly followed me— 11 'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--
none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they have unreservedly followed the Lord.' 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.'
And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord had disappeared. 13 The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.
And now you, a brood of sinners, have risen in place of your fathers, to increase the Lord's fierce anger against Israel! 14 "And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel.
If you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people." 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction."
Then they came up to him and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our little ones, 16 Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children.
but we will take up arms as a vanguard before the Israelites, until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our little ones will stay in the fortified towns because of the inhabitants of the land. 17 But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
We will not return to our homes until all the Israelites have obtained their inheritance. 18 We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance.
We will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east." 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan."
So Moses said to them, "If you do this—if you take up arms to go before the Lord for the war, 20 Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,
and all those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before the Lord, until he has driven out his enemies from before him 21 and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him--
and the land is subdued before the Lord—then after that you may return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the Lord. 22 then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD.
But if you do not do this, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out. 23 "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
Build towns for your little ones, and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised." 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised."
Then the Gadites and the Reubenites said to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands. 25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands.
Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock shall remain there in the towns of Gilead; 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
but your servants will cross over, everyone armed for war, to do battle for the Lord, just as my lord orders." 27 But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says."
So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral houses of the Israelite tribes. 28 Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
And Moses said to them, "If the Gadites and the Reubenites, everyone armed for battle before the Lord, will cross over the Jordan with you and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession; 29 He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession.
but if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." 30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan."
The Gadites and the Reubenites answered, "As the Lord has spoken to your servants, so we will do. 31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said.
We will cross over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan." 32 We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan."
Moses gave to them—to the Gadites and to the Reubenites and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph—the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites and the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, the land and its towns, with the territories of the surrounding towns. 33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.
And the Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 36 Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.
And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim,
Nebo, and Baal-meon (some names being changed), and Sibmah; and they gave names to the towns that they rebuilt. 38 as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were there; 39 The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there.
so Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.
Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and renamed them Havvoth-jair. 41 Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.
And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and renamed it Nobah after himself. 42 And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
