Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus - To all God's people in Philippi who are in union with Christ Jesus, including the church leaders and helpers: 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God for you every time I think of you; 3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
and every time I pray for you all, I pray with joy 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
because of the way in which you have helped me in the work of the gospel from the very first day until now. 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus. 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
You are always in my heart! And so it is only right for me to feel as I do about you. For you have all shared with me in this privilege that God has given me, both now that I am in prison and also while I was free to defend the gospel and establish it firmly. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me.
God is my witness that I tell the truth when I say that my deep feeling for you all comes from the heart of Christ Jesus himself. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
I pray that your love will keep on growing more and more, together with true knowledge and perfect judgment, 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
so that you will be able to choose what is best. Then you will be free from all impurity and blame on the Day of Christ. 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,
Your lives will be filled with the truly good qualities which only Jesus Christ can produce, for the glory and praise of God. 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.
I want you to know, my friends, that the things that have happened to me have really helped the progress of the gospel. 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
As a result, the whole palace guard and all the others here know that I am in prison because I am a servant of Christ. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
And my being in prison has given most of the believers more confidence in the Lord, so that they grow bolder all the time to preach the message fearlessly. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Of course some of them preach Christ because they are jealous and quarrelsome, but others from genuine good will. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
These do so from love, because they know that God has given me the work of defending the gospel. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
The others do not proclaim Christ sincerely, but from a spirit of selfish ambition; they think that they will make more trouble for me while I am in prison. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.
It does not matter! I am happy about it - just so Christ is preached in every way possible, whether from wrong or right motives. And I will continue to be happy, 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
because I know that by means of your prayers and the help which comes from the Spirit of Jesus Christ I shall be set free. 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
My deep desire and hope is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage, so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
For what is life? To me, it is Christ. Death, then, will bring more. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
But if by continuing to live I can do more worthwhile work, then I am not sure which I should choose. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
I am pulled in two directions. I want very much to leave this life and be with Christ, which is a far better thing; 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
but for your sake it is much more important that I remain alive. 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
I am sure of this, and so I know that I will stay. I will stay on with you all, to add to your progress and joy in the faith, 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
so that when I am with you again, you will have even more reason to be proud of me in your life in union with Christ Jesus. 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
Now, the important thing is that your way of life should be as the gospel of Christ requires, so that, whether or not I am able to go and see you, I will hear that you are standing firm with one common purpose and that with only one desire you are fighting together for the faith of the gospel. 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
Don't be afraid of your enemies; always be courageous, and this will prove to them that they will lose and that you will win, because it is God who gives you the victory. 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God.
For you have been given the privilege of serving Christ, not only by believing in him, but also by suffering for him. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
Now you can take part with me in the battle. It is the same battle you saw me fighting in the past, and as you hear, the one I am fighting still. 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
