Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
to receive the instruction of wisdom, righteousness and judgment, and equity; 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
He that is wise will hear, and will increase learning; and the intelligent will gain wise counsels: 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
to understand a proverb and an allegory, the words of the wise and their enigmas. 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother; 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
for they shall be a garland of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
cast in thy lot among us; we will all have one purse: 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
-- my son, walk not in the way with them, keep back thy foot from their path; 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
For in vain the net is spread in the sight of anything which hath wings. 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
And these lay wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
So are the paths of every one that is greedy of gain: it taketh away the life of its possessors. 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
Wisdom crieth without; she raiseth her voice in the broadways; 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
she calleth in the chief [place] of concourse, in the entry of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words: 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
How long, simple ones, will ye love simpleness, and scorners take pleasure in their scorning, and the foolish hate knowledge? 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour forth my spirit unto you, I will make known to you my words. 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one regarded; 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
and ye have rejected all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
I also will laugh in your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh; 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
when your fear cometh as sudden destruction, and your calamity cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you: 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
-- then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me early, and shall not find me. 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Jehovah; 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
they would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof: 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their way, and be filled with their own devices. 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall cause them to perish. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be at rest from fear of evil. 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
