A wise son maketh the father glad: but a foolish son is the sorrow of his mother. 1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.
Treasures of wickedness shall profit nothing: but justice shall deliver from death. 2 Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death.
The Lord will not afflict the soul of the just with famine, and he will disappoint the deceitful practices of the wicked. 3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
The slothful hand hath wrought poverty: but the hand of the industrious getteth riches. He that trusteth to lies feedeth the winds: and the same runneth after birds, that fly away. 4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
He that gathereth in the harvest, is a wise son: but he that snorteth in the summer, is the son of confusion. 5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but iniquity covereth the mouth of the wicked. 6 Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
The memory of the just is with praises: and the name of the wicked shall rot. 7 The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise of heart receiveth precepts: a fool is beaten with lips. 8 The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
He that walketh sincerely, walketh confidently: but he that perverteth his ways, shall be manifest. 9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.
He that winketh with the eye, shall cause sorrow: and the foolish in lips shall be beaten. 10 He who winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
The mouth of the just is a vein of life: and the mouth of the wicked covereth iniquity. 11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
Hatred stirreth up strifes: and charity covereth all sins. 12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.
In the lips of the wise is wisdom found: and a rod on the back of him that wanteth sense. 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the fool is next to confusion. 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
The substance of a rich man is the city of his strength: the fear of the poor is their poverty. 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
The work of the just is unto life: but the fruit of the wicked unto sin. 16 The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.
The way of life, to him that observeth correction: but he that forsaketh reproofs, goeth astray. 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
Lying lips hide hatred: he that uttereth reproach, is foolish. 18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
In the multitude of words there shall not want sin: but he that refraineth his lips, is most wise. 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.
The tongue of the just is as choice silver: but the heart of the wicked is nothing worth. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
The lips of the just teach many: but they that are ignorant, shall die in the want of understanding. 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.
The blessing of the Lord maketh men rich: neither shall affliction be joined to them. 22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
A fool worketh mischief as it were for sport: but wisdom is prudence to a man. 23 A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom.
That which the wicked feareth, shall come upon him: to the just their desire shall be given. 24 What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted.
As a tempest that passeth, so the wicked shall be no more: but the just is as an everlasting foundation. 25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
As vinegar to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that sent him. 26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him.
The fear of the Lord shall prolong days: and the years of the wicked shall be shortened. 27 The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The expectation of the just is joy: but the hope of the wicked shall perish. 28 The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
The strength of the upright is the way of the Lord: and fear to them that work evil. 29 The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
The just shall never be moved: but the wicked shall not dwell on the earth. 30 The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
The mouth of the just shall bring forth wisdom: the tongue of the perverse shall perish. 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
The lips of the just consider what is acceptable: and the mouth of the wicked uttereth perverse things. 32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
