New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
My child, listen to me and treasure my instructions. 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
Cry out for insight and understanding. 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure. 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. 7 He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him. 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will know how to find the right course of action every time. 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair--every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Wise planning will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. 11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose speech is corrupt. 12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,
These people turn from right ways to walk down dark and evil paths. 13 who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways,
They rejoice in doing wrong, and they enjoy evil as it turns things upside down. 14 who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
What they do is crooked, and their ways are wrong. 15 whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.
Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the adulterous woman. 16 It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words,
She has abandoned her husband and ignores the covenant she made before God. 17 who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.
Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to hell. 18 For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.
The man who visits her is doomed. He will never reach the paths of life. 19 None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.
Follow the steps of good men instead, and stay on the paths of the righteous. 20 Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous.
For only the upright will live in the land, and those who have integrity will remain in it. 21 For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it;
But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be destroyed. 22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.
