New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart, 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will give you a long and satisfying life. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will gain a good reputation. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn your back on evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
Then you will gain renewed health and vitality. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with the finest wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My child, don't ignore it when the LORD disciplines you, and don't be discouraged when he corrects you. 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy is the person who finds wisdom and gains understanding. 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
For the profit of wisdom is better than silver, and her wages are better than gold. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
She offers you life in her right hand, and riches and honor in her left. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
By wisdom the LORD founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens. 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
By his knowledge the deep fountains of the earth burst forth, and the clouds poured down rain. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My child, don't lose sight of good planning and insight. Hang on to them, 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
for they fill you with life and bring you honor and respect. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
They keep you safe on your way and keep your feet from stumbling. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
You can lie down without fear and enjoy pleasant dreams. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
You need not be afraid of disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for the LORD is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
If you can help your neighbor now, don't say, "Come back tomorrow, and then I'll help you." 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Do not plot against your neighbors, for they trust you. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't make accusations against someone who hasn't wronged you. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Do not envy violent people; don't copy their ways. 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
Such wicked people are an abomination to the LORD, but he offers his friendship to the godly. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but his blessing is on the home of the upright. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
The LORD mocks at mockers, but he shows favor to the humble. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
The wise inherit honor, but fools are put to shame! 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
