The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him: 1 The sayings of King Lemuel--an oracle his mother taught him:
What, my son? And what, son of my womb? And what, son of my vows? 2 "O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,
Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings. 3 do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink; 4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel-- not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer,
Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted. 5 lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart. 6 Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish;
Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more. 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die. 8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
