Listen, children, to a father's instruction; pay attention, in order to gain insight; 1 Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
for I am giving you good advice; so don't abandon my teaching. 2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
For I too was once a child to my father; and my mother, too, thought of me as her special darling. 3 When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender, and an only child of my mother,
He too taught me; he said to me, "Let your heart treasure my words; keep my commands, and live; 4 he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live.
gain wisdom, gain insight; don't forget or turn from the words I am saying. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.
Don't abandon [wisdom]; then she will preserve you; love her, and she will protect you. 6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom! And along with all your getting, get insight! 7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will bring you honor; 8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.
she will give your head a garland of grace, bestow on you a crown of glory." 9 She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor."
Listen, my son, receive what I say, and the years of your life will be many. 10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.
I'm directing you on the way of wisdom, guiding you in paths of uprightness; 11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
when you walk, your step won't be hindered; and if you run, you won't stumble. 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold fast to discipline, don't let it go; guard it, for it is your life. 13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.
Don't follow the path of the wicked or walk on the way of evildoers. 14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.
Avoid it, don't go on it, turn away from it, and pass on. 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
For they can't sleep if they haven't done evil, they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone fall. 16 For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.
For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining ever brighter until full daylight. 18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
The way of the wicked is like darkness; they don't even know what makes them stumble. 19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.
My son, pay attention to what I am saying; incline your ear to my words. 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.
Don't let them out of your sight, keep them deep in your heart; 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them and health to their whole being. 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.
Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life's consequences. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Keep crooked speech out of your mouth, banish deceit from your lips. 24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze on what lies in front of you. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.
Level the path for your feet, let all your ways be properly prepared; 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.
then deviate neither right nor left; and keep your foot far from evil. 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
