The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Do you hear Lady Wisdom calling? Can you hear Madame Insight raising her voice? 1 Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?
She's taken her stand at First and Main, at the busiest intersection. 2 On the heights along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
Right in the city square where the traffic is thickest, she shouts, 3 beside the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries aloud:
"You - I'm talking to all of you, everyone out here on the streets! 4 "To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.
Listen, you idiots - learn good sense! You blockheads - shape up! 5 You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding.
Don't miss a word of this - I'm telling you how to live well, I'm telling you how to live at your best. 6 Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.
My mouth chews and savors and relishes truth - I can't stand the taste of evil! 7 My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness.
You'll only hear true and right words from my mouth; not one syllable will be twisted or skewed. 8 All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.
You'll recognize this as true - you with open minds; truth-ready minds will see it at once. 9 To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who have knowledge.
Prefer my life-disciplines over chasing after money, and God-knowledge over a lucrative career. 10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,
For Wisdom is better than all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her. 11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
"I am Lady Wisdom, and I live next to Sanity; Knowledge and Discretion live just down the street. 12 "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.
The Fear-of-God means hating Evil, whose ways I hate with a passion - pride and arrogance and crooked talk. 13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.
Good counsel and common sense are my characteristics; I am both Insight and the Virtue to live it out. 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power.
With my help, leaders rule, and lawmakers legislate fairly; 15 By me kings reign and rulers make laws that are just;
With my help, governors govern, along with all in legitimate authority. 16 by me princes govern, and all nobles who rule on earth.
I love those who love me; those who look for me find me. 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.
Wealth and Glory accompany me - also substantial Honor and a Good Name. 18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.
My benefits are worth more than a big salary, even a very big salary; the returns on me exceed any imaginable bonus. 19 My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.
You can find me on Righteous Road - that's where I walk - at the intersection of Justice Avenue, 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice,
Handing out life to those who love me, filling their arms with life - armloads of life! 21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full.
"God sovereignly made me - the first, the basic - before he did anything else. 22 "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old;
I was brought into being a long time ago, well before Earth got its start. 23 I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.
I arrived on the scene before Ocean, yes, even before Springs and Rivers and Lakes. 24 When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water;
Before Mountains were sculpted and Hills took shape, I was already there, newborn; 25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth,
Long before God stretched out Earth's Horizons, and tended to the minute details of Soil and Weather, 26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world.
And set Sky firmly in place, I was there. When he mapped and gave borders to wild Ocean, 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
built the vast vault of Heaven, and installed the fountains that fed Ocean, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
When he drew a boundary for Sea, posted a sign that said, no trespassing, And then staked out Earth's foundations, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
I was right there with him, making sure everything fit. Day after day I was there, with my joyful applause, always enjoying his company, 30 Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence,
Delighted with the world of things and creatures, happily celebrating the human family. 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.
"So, my dear friends, listen carefully; those who embrace these my ways are most blessed. 32 "Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.
Mark a life of discipline and live wisely; don't squander your precious life. 33 Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.
Blessed the man, blessed the woman, who listens to me, awake and ready for me each morning, alert and responsive as I start my day's work. 34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.
When you find me, you find life, real life, to say nothing of God's good pleasure. 35 For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD.
But if you wrong me, you damage your very soul; when you reject me, you're flirting with death." 36 But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death."
