Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
On the lips of him who has understanding wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense. 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
Wise men lay up knowledge, but the babbling of a fool brings ruin near. 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
A rich man's wealth is his strong city; the poverty of the poor is their ruin. 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
The wage of the righteous leads to life, the gain of the wicked to sin. 16 The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.
He who heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof goes astray. 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
He who conceals hatred has lying lips, and he who utters slander is a fool. 18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent. 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.
The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the mind of the wicked is of little worth. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.
The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. 22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
It is like sport to a fool to do wrong, but wise conduct is pleasure to a man of understanding. 23 A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom.
