A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
From the fruit of his mouth a good man eats good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. 2 From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful have a craving for violence.
He who guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. 3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.
The soul of the sluggard craves, and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. 4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
A righteous man hates falsehood, but a wicked man acts shamefully and disgracefully. 5 The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
Righteousness guards him whose way is upright, but sin overthrows the wicked. 6 Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
