New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
A wicked ruler is as dangerous to the poor as a lion or bear attacking them. 15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.
Only a stupid prince will oppress his people, but a king will have a long reign if he hates dishonesty and bribes. 16 A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment, but he who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life.
A murderer's tormented conscience will drive him into the grave. Don't protect him! 17 A man tormented by the guilt of murder will be a fugitive till death; let no one support him.
The honest will be rescued from harm, but those who are crooked will be destroyed. 18 He whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but he whose ways are perverse will suddenly fall.
Hard workers have plenty of food; playing around brings poverty. 19 He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
The trustworthy will get a rich reward. But the person who wants to get rich quick will only get into trouble. 20 A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
Showing partiality is never good, yet some will do wrong for something as small as a piece of bread. 21 To show partiality is not good-- yet a man will do wrong for a piece of bread.
A greedy person tries to get rich quick, but it only leads to poverty. 22 A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him.
In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. 23 He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue.
Robbing your parents and then saying, "What's wrong with that?" is as serious as committing murder. 24 He who robs his father or mother and says, "It's not wrong"-- he is partner to him who destroys.
Greed causes fighting; trusting the LORD leads to prosperity. 25 A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
