| 1 Why standest thou afar off, O Jehovah? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? | 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? |
| 2 In the pride of the wicked the poor is hotly pursued; Let them be taken in the devices that they have conceived. | 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. |
| 3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, And the covetous renounceth, [yea], contemneth Jehovah. | 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. |
| 4 The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, [saith], He will not require [it]. All his thoughts are, There is no God. | 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. |
| 5 His ways are firm at all times; Thy judgments are far above out of his sight: As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them. | 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. |
| 6 He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved; To all generations I shall not be in adversity. | 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." |
| 7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression: Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity. | 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. |
| 8 He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; In the secret places doth he murder the innocent; His eyes are privily set against the helpless. | 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. |
| 9 He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert; He lieth in wait to catch the poor: He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net. | 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. |
| 10 He croucheth, he boweth down, And the helpless fall by his strong ones. | 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. |
| 11 He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten; He hideth his face; he will never see it. | 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." |
| 12 Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand: Forget not the poor. | 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. |
| 13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God, And say in his heart, Thou wilt not require [it]? | 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? |
| 14 Thou hast seen [it]; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: The helpless committeth [himself] unto thee; Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless. | 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. |
| 15 Break thou the arm of the wicked; And as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness till thou find none. | 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. |
| 16 Jehovah is King for ever and ever: The nations are perished out of his land. | 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. |
| 17 Jehovah, thou hast heard the desire of the meek: Thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear; | 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, |
| 18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, That man who is of the earth may be terrible no more. | 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more. |
