New King James Version (NKJV) New International Version (NIV)
Why do You stand afar off, O Lord? Why do You hide in times of trouble? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
His ways are always prospering; Your judgments are far above, out of his sight; As for all his enemies, he sneers at them. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
He has said in his heart, "I shall not be moved; I shall never be in adversity." 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the secret places he murders the innocent; His eyes are secretly fixed on the helpless. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
He lies in wait secretly, as a lion in his den; He lies in wait to catch the poor; He catches the poor when he draws him into his net. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
So he crouches, he lies low, That the helpless may fall by his strength. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
He has said in his heart, "God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see." 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble. 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why do the wicked renounce God? He has said in his heart, "You will not require an account." 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; Seek out his wickedness until You find none. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The Lord is King forever and ever; The nations have perished out of His land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
