Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor— let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
For the wicked boast of the desires of their heart, those greedy for gain curse and renounce the Lord. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
In the pride of their countenance the wicked say, "God will not seek it out"; all their thoughts are, "There is no God." 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
Their ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of their sight; as for their foes, they scoff at them. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
They think in their heart, "We shall not be moved; throughout all generations we shall not meet adversity." 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
Their mouths are filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under their tongues are mischief and iniquity. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
They sit in ambush in the villages; in hiding places they murder the innocent. Their eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
they lurk in secret like a lion in its covert; they lurk that they may seize the poor; they seize the poor and drag them off in their net. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
They stoop, they crouch, and the helpless fall by their might. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
They think in their heart, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Rise up, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; do not forget the oppressed. 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why do the wicked renounce God, and say in their hearts, "You will not call us to account"? 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
But you do see! Indeed you note trouble and grief, that you may take it into your hands; the helpless commit themselves to you; you have been the helper of the orphan. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and evildoers; seek out their wickedness until you find none. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The Lord is king forever and ever; the nations shall perish from his land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
O Lord, you will hear the desire of the meek; you will strengthen their heart, you will incline your ear 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that those from earth may strike terror no more. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
