GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
O LORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry for help come to you. 1 Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry for help come to you.
Do not hide your face from me when I am in trouble. Turn your ear toward me. Answer me quickly when I call. 2 Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
My days disappear like smoke. My bones burn like hot coals. 3 For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers.
My heart is beaten down and withered like grass because I have forgotten about eating. 4 My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food.
I am nothing but skin and bones because of my loud groans. 5 Because of my loud groaning I am reduced to skin and bones.
I am like a desert owl, like an owl living in the ruins. 6 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake. I am like a lonely bird on a rooftop. 7 I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.
All day long my enemies insult me. Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse. 8 All day long my enemies taunt me; those who rail against me use my name as a curse.
I eat ashes like bread and my tears are mixed with my drink 9 For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears
because of your hostility and anger, because you have picked me up and thrown me away. 10 because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.
My days are like a shadow that is getting longer, and I wither away like grass. 11 My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.
But you, O LORD, remain forever. You are remembered throughout every generation. 12 But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations.
You will rise and have compassion on Zion, because it is time to grant a favor to it. Indeed, the appointed time has come. 13 You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come.
Your servants value Zion's stones, and they pity its rubble. 14 For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust moves them to pity.
The nations will fear the LORD's name. All the kings of the earth will fear your glory. 15 The nations will fear the name of the LORD, all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.
When the LORD builds Zion, he will appear in his glory. 16 For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
He will turn his attention to the prayers of those who have been abandoned. He will not despise their prayers. 17 He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.
This will be written down for a future generation so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: 18 Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD:
"The LORD looked down from his holy place high above. From heaven he looked at the earth. 19 "The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth,
He heard the groans of the prisoners and set free those who were condemned to death. 20 to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death."
The LORD's name is announced in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem 21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem
when nations and kingdoms gather to worship the LORD." 22 when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to worship the LORD.
He has weakened my strength along the way. He has reduced [the number of] my days. 23 In the course of my life he broke my strength; he cut short my days.
I said, "My God, don't take me now in the middle of my life. Your years [continue on] throughout every generation. 24 So I said: "Do not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations.
Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth. Even the heavens are the works of your hands. 25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will come to an end, but you will still go on. They will all wear out like clothing. You will change them like clothes, and they will be thrown away. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded.
But you remain the same, and your life will never end. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end.
The children of your servants will go on living [here]. Their descendants will be secure in your presence." 28 The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you."
