Thank the Lord because he is good. His love continues forever. 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
That is what those whom the Lord has saved should say. He has saved them from the enemy 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
and has gathered them from other lands, from east and west, north and south. 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some people had wandered in the desert lands. They found no city in which to live. 4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
They were hungry and thirsty, and they were discouraged. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.
In their misery they cried out to the Lord, and he saved them from their troubles. 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them on a straight road to a city where they could live. 7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
He satisfies the thirsty and fills up the hungry. 9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Some sat in gloom and darkness; they were prisoners suffering in chains. 10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains,
They had turned against the words of God and had refused the advice of God Most High. 11 for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
So he broke their pride by hard work. They stumbled, and no one helped. 12 So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
In their misery they cried out to the Lord, and he saved them from their troubles. 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of their gloom and darkness and broke their chains. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
He breaks down bronze gates and cuts apart iron bars. 16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Some fools turned against God and suffered for the evil they did. 17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
They refused to eat anything, so they almost died. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.
In their misery they cried out to the Lord, and he saved them from their troubles. 19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
God gave the command and healed them, so they were saved from dying. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them offer sacrifices to thank him. With joy they should tell what he has done. 22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Others went out to sea in ships and did business on the great oceans. 23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They saw what the Lord could do, the miracles he did in the deep oceans. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
He spoke, and a storm came up, which blew up high waves. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
The ships were tossed as high as the sky and fell low to the depths. The storm was so bad that they lost their courage. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.
They stumbled and fell like people who were drunk. They did not know what to do. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end.
In their misery they cried out to the Lord, and he saved them from their troubles. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm and calmed the waves. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were happy that it was quiet, and God guided them to the port they wanted. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them praise his greatness in the meeting of the people; let them praise him in the meeting of the older leaders. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
He changed rivers into a desert and springs of water into dry ground. 33 He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground,
He made fertile land salty, because the people there did evil. 34 and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
He changed the desert into pools of water and dry ground into springs of water. 35 He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs;
He had the hungry settle there so they could build a city in which to live. 36 there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.
They planted seeds in the fields and vineyards, and they had a good harvest. 37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest;
God blessed them, and they grew in number. Their cattle did not become fewer. 38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.
Because of disaster, troubles, and sadness, their families grew smaller and weaker. 39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
He showed he was displeased with their leaders and made them wander in a pathless desert. 40 he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
But he lifted the poor out of their suffering and made their families grow like flocks of sheep. 41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.
Good people see this and are happy, but the wicked say nothing. 42 The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
Whoever is wise will remember these things and will think about the love of the Lord. A song. A psalm of David. 43 Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.
