O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; 4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town. 7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things. 9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Some sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons, 10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains,
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. 11 for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
Their hearts were bowed down with hard labor; they fell down, with no one to help. 12 So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress; 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
he brought them out of darkness and gloom, and broke their bonds asunder. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
For he shatters the doors of bronze, and cuts in two the bars of iron. 16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Some were sick through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities endured affliction; 17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress; 19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of his deeds with songs of joy. 22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.
they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits' end. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, 33 He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground,
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. 34 and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. 35 He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs;
And there he lets the hungry live, and they establish a town to live in; 36 there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.
they sow fields, and plant vineyards, and get a fruitful yield. 37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest;
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their cattle decrease. 38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, 39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; 40 he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
but he raises up the needy out of distress, and makes their families like flocks. 41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.
The upright see it and are glad; and all wickedness stops its mouth. 42 The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the Lord. 43 Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.
