New American Standard (NAS) New International Version (NIV)
Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. 1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate. 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
