New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
A song for the ascent to Jerusalem. A psalm of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is useless. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. 1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. 3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
Children born to a young man are like sharp arrows in a warrior's hands. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
How happy is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates. 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
