By the rivers of Bavel we sat down and wept as we remembered Tziyon. 1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.
We had hung up our lyres on the willows that were there, 2 There on the poplars we hung our harps,
when those who had taken us captive asked us to sing them a song; our tormentors demanded joy from us -"Sing us one of the songs from Tziyon!" 3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
How can we sing a song about ADONAI here on foreign soil? 4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Yerushalayim, may my right hand wither away! 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget [its skill].
May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I fail to remember you, if I fail to count Yerushalayim the greatest of all my joys. 6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
Remember, ADONAI, against the people of Edom the day of Yerushalayim's fall, how they cried, "Tear it down! Tear it down! Raze it to the ground!" 7 Remember, O LORD, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell. "Tear it down," they cried, "tear it down to its foundations!"
Daughter of Bavel, you will be destroyed! A blessing on anyone who pays you back for the way you treated us! 8 O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us--
A blessing on anyone who seizes your babies and smashes them against a rock! 9 he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.
