(16-1) <The prayer of David.> Hear, O Lord, my justice: attend to my supplication. Give ear unto my prayer, which proceedeth not from deceitful lips. 1 Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer-- it does not rise from deceitful lips.
(16-2) Let my judgment come forth from thy countenance: let thy eyes behold the things that are equitable. 2 May my vindication come from you; may your eyes see what is right.
(16-3) Thou hast proved my heart, and visited it by night, thou hast tried me by fire: and iniquity hath not been found in me. 3 Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
(16-4) That my mouth may not speak the works of men: for the sake of the words of thy lips, I have kept hard ways. 4 As for the deeds of men-- by the word of your lips I have kept myself from the ways of the violent.
(16-5) Perfect thou my goings in thy paths: that my footsteps be not moved. 5 My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not slipped.
(16-6) I have cried to thee, for thou, O God, hast heard me: O incline thy ear unto me, and hear my words. 6 I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.
(16-7) Shew forth thy wonderful mercies; thou who savest them that trust in thee. 7 Show the wonder of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.
(16-8) From them that resist thy right hand keep me, as the apple of thy eye. Protect me under the shadow of thy wings. 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings
(16-9) From the face of the wicked who have afflicted me. My enemies have surrounded my soul: 9 from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
(16-10) They have shut up their fat: their mouth hath spoken proudly. 10 They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.
(16-11) They have cast me forth, and now they have surrounded me: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth. 11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
(16-12) They have taken me, as a lion prepared for the prey; and as a young lion dwelling in secret places. 12 They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a great lion crouching in cover.
(16-13) Arise, O Lord, disappoint him and supplant him; deliver my soul from the wicked one; thy sword 13 Rise up, O LORD, confront them, bring them down; rescue me from the wicked by your sword.
(16-14) From the enemies of thy hand. O Lord, divide them from the few of the earth in their life: their belly is filled from thy hidden stores. They are full of children: and they have left to their little ones the rest of their substance. 14 O LORD, by your hand save me from such men, from men of this world whose reward is in this life. You still the hunger of those you cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.
(16-15) But as for me, I will appear before thy sight in justice: I shall be satisfied when thy glory shall appear. 15 And I--in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
