| Common English Bible (CEB) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation. Should I fear anyone? The LORD is a fortress protecting my life. Should I be frightened of anything? | 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid? |
| 2 When evildoers come at me trying to eat me up— it's they, my foes and my enemies, who stumble and fall! | 2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. |
| 3 If an army camps against me, my heart won't be afraid. If war comes up against me, I will continue to trust in this: | 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. |
| 4 I have asked one thing from the LORD— it's all I seek— to live in the LORD's house all the days of my life, seeing the LORD's beauty and constantly adoring his temple. | 4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. |
| 5 Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling during troubling times; he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent; he will set me up high, safe on a rock. | 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. |
| 6 Now my head is higher than the enemies surrounding me, and I will offer sacrifices in God's tent— sacrifices with shouts of joy! I will sing and praise the LORD. | 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD. |
| 7 LORD, listen to my voice when I cry out— have mercy on me and answer me! | 7 Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. |
| 8 Come, my heart says, seek God's face. LORD, I do seek your face! | 8 My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, LORD, I will seek. |
| 9 Please don't hide it from me! Don't push your servant aside angrily— you have been my help! God who saves me, don't neglect me! Don't leave me all alone! | 9 Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. |
| 10 Even if my father and mother left me all alone, the LORD would take me in. | 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me. |
| 11 LORD, teach me your way; because of my opponents, lead me on a good path. | 11 Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. |
| 12 Don't give me over to the desires of my enemies, because false witnesses and violent accusers have taken their stand against me. | 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence. |
| 13 But I have sure faith that I will experience the LORD's goodness in the land of the living! | 13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. |
| 14 Hope in the LORD! Be strong! Let your heart take courage! Hope in the LORD! | 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. |
