(34-1) <For David himself.> Judge thou, O Lord, them that wrong me: overthrow them that fight against me. 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
(34-2) Take hold of arms and shield: and rise up to help me. 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid.
(34-3) Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me: say to my soul: I am thy salvation. 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."
(34-4) Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek after my soul. Let them be turned back and be confounded that devise evil against me. 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
(34-5) Let them become as dust before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord straiten them. 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;
(34-6) Let their way become dark and slippery; and let the angel of the Lord pursue them. 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
(34-7) For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction: without cause they have upbraided my soul. 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me,
(34-8) Let the snare which he knoweth not come upon him: and let the net which he hath hidden catch him: and into that very snare let them fall. 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
(34-9) But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; and shall be delighted in his salvation. 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.
(34-10) All my bones shall say: Lord, who is like to thee? Who deliverest the poor from the hand of them that are stronger than he; the needy and the poor from them that strip him. 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them."
(34-11) Unjust witnesses rising up have asked me things I knew not. 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.
(34-12) They repaid me evil for good: to the depriving me of my soul. 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn.
(34-13) But as for me, when they were troublesome to me, I was clothed with haircloth. I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom. 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
(34-14) As a neighbour and as an own brother, so did I please: as one mourning and sorrowful so was I humbled. 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
(34-15) But they rejoiced against me, and came together: scourges were gathered together upon me, and I knew not. 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing.
(34-16) They were separated, and repented not: they tempted me, they scoffed at me with scorn: they gnashed upon me with their teeth. 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me.
(34-17) Lord, when wilt thou look upon me? rescue thou my soul from their malice: my only one from the lions. 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.
(34-18) I will give thanks to thee in a great church; I will praise thee in a strong people. 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you.
(34-19) Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: who have hated me without cause, and wink with the eyes. 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
(34-20) For they spoke indeed peaceably to me; and speaking in the anger of the earth they devised guile. 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.
(34-21) And they opened their mouth wide against me; they said: Well done, well done, our eyes have seen it. 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it."
(34-22) Thou hast seen, O Lord, be not thou silent: O Lord, depart not from me. 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord.
(34-23) Arise, and be attentive to my judgment: to my cause, my God, and my Lord. 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.
(34-24) Judge me, O Lord my God according to thy justice, and let them not rejoice over me. 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.
(34-25) Let them not say in their hearts: It is well, it is well, to our mind: neither let them say: We have swallowed him up. 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up."
(34-26) Let them blush: and be ashamed to gether, who rejoice at my evils. Let them be clothed with confusion and shame, who speak great things against me. 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.
(34-27) Let them rejoice and be glad, who are well pleased with my justice, and let them say always: The Lord be magnified, who delights in the peace of his servant. 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant."
(34-28) And my tongue shall meditate thy justice, thy praise all the day long. 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
