| 1 For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of David. I said to myself, "I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will curb my tongue when the ungodly are around me." | 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." |
| 2 But as I stood there in silence -- not even speaking of good things -- the turmoil within me grew to the bursting point. | 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. |
| 3 My thoughts grew hot within me and began to burn, igniting a fire of words: | 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: |
| 4 "LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away. | 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. |
| 5 My life is no longer than the width of my hand. An entire lifetime is just a moment to you; human existence is but a breath." Interlude | 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" |
| 6 We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth for someone else to spend. | 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. |
| 7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. | 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. |
| 8 Rescue me from my rebellion, for even fools mock me when I rebel. | 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. |
| 9 I am silent before you; I won't say a word. For my punishment is from you. | 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. |
| 10 Please, don't punish me anymore! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand. | 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. |
| 11 When you discipline people for their sins, their lives can be crushed like the life of a moth. Human existence is as frail as breath. Interlude | 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah" |
| 12 Hear my prayer, O LORD! Listen to my cries for help! Don't ignore my tears. For I am your guest -- a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me. | 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. |
| 13 Spare me so I can smile again before I am gone and exist no more. | 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more." |
