| 1 (39-1) <Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.> (39-2) With expectation I have waited for the Lord, and he was attentive to me. | 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. |
| 2 (39-3) And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps. | 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. |
| 3 (39-4) And he put a new canticle into my mouth, a song to our God. Many shall see, and shall fear: and they shall hope in the Lord. | 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. |
| 4 (39-5) Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies. | 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. |
| 5 (39-6) Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God: and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number. | 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. |
| 6 (39-7) Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require: | 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. |
| 7 (39-8) Then said I, Behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me | 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. |
| 8 (39-9) That I should do thy will: O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart. | 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." |
| 9 (39-10) I have declared thy justice in a great church, lo, I will not restrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest it. | 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. |
| 10 (39-11) I have not hid thy justice within my heart: I have declared thy truth and thy salvation. I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great council. | 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. |
| 11 (39-12) Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me: thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me. | 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. |
| 12 (39-13) For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: and my heart hath forsaken me. | 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. |
| 13 (39-14) Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. look down, O Lord, to help me. | 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. |
| 14 (39-15) Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me. | 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. |
| 15 (39-16) Let them immediately bear their confusion, that say to me: ’T is well, t’ is well. | 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. |
| 16 (39-17) Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified. | 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" |
| 17 (39-18) But I am a beggar and poor: the Lord is careful for me. Thou art my helper and my protector: O my God, be not slack. | 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay. |
