New Revised Standard (NRS) New International Version (NIV)
We have heard with our ears, O God, our ancestors have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: 1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; 2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.
for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm give them victory; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your countenance, for you delighted in them. 3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
You are my King and my God; you command victories for Jacob. 4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down our assailants. 5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. 6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to confusion those who hate us. 7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. (Selah) 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. "Selah"
Yet you have rejected us and abased us, and have not gone out with our armies. 9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
You made us turn back from the foe, and our enemies have gotten spoil. 10 You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
You have made us like sheep for slaughter, and have scattered us among the nations. 11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. 12 You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. 13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 14 You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face 15 My disgrace is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame
at the words of the taunters and revilers, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. 16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, or been false to your covenant. 17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way, 18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. 19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
Because of you we are being killed all day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not cast us off forever! 23 Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself ! Do not reject us forever.
Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? 24 Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
For we sink down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. 25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
Rise up, come to our help. Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love. 26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.
