Psalm 44 RSV/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what deeds thou didst perform in their days, in the days of old: 1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
thou with thy own hand didst drive out the nations, but them thou didst plant; thou didst afflict the peoples, but them thou didst set free; 2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.
for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm give them victory; but thy right hand, and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance; for thou didst delight in them. 3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
Thou art my King and my God, who ordainest victories for Jacob. 4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
Through thee we push down our foes; through thy name we tread down our assailants. 5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. 6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
But thou hast saved us from our foes, and hast put to confusion those who hate us. 7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to thy name for ever. [Selah] 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. "Selah"
Yet thou hast cast us off and abased us, and hast not gone out with our armies. 9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
Thou hast made us turn back from the foe; and our enemies have gotten spoil. 10 You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
Thou hast made us like sheep for slaughter, and hast scattered us among the nations. 11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
Thou hast sold thy people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. 12 You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
Thou hast made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those about us. 13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
Thou hast made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. 14 You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face, 15 My disgrace is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame
at the words of the taunters and revilers, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. 16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten thee, or been false to thy covenant. 17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from thy way, 18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
that thou shouldst have broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. 19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god, 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
Nay, for thy sake we are slain all the day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Rouse thyself! Why sleepest thou, O Lord? Awake! Do not cast us off for ever! 23 Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself ! Do not reject us forever.
Why dost thou hide thy face? Why dost thou forget our affliction and oppression? 24 Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our body cleaves to the ground. 25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
Rise up, come to our help! Deliver us for the sake of thy steadfast love! 26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.
