New Century Version (NCV) New International Version (NIV)
God, be merciful to me because you are loving. Because you are always ready to be merciful, wipe out all my wrongs. 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my guilt and make me clean again. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
I know about my wrongs, and I can't forget my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
You are the only one I have sinned against; I have done what you say is wrong. You are right when you speak and fair when you judge. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.
I was brought into this world in sin. In sin my mother gave birth to me. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
You want me to be completely truthful, so teach me wisdom. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Take away my sin, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Make me hear sounds of joy and gladness; let the bones you crushed be happy again. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Turn your face from my sins and wipe out all my guilt. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
Create in me a pure heart, God, and make my spirit right again. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not send me away from you or take your Holy Spirit away from me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Give me back the joy of your salvation. Keep me strong by giving me a willing spirit. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Then I will teach your ways to those who do wrong, and sinners will turn back to you. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
God, save me from the guilt of murder, God of my salvation, and I will sing about your goodness. 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
Lord, let me speak so I may praise you. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
You are not pleased by sacrifices, or I would give them. You don't want burnt offerings. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
The sacrifice God wants is a broken spirit. God, you will not reject a heart that is broken and sorry for sin. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Do whatever good you wish for Jerusalem. Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with right sacrifices and whole burnt offerings, and bulls will be offered on your altar. 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight you; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
